Born in the Orkney Islands, Arnie joined the SS SAMFINN as a cadet in 1944.

Arnie sailed on the Liberty SAMFINN for nearly three years. During one voyage in the Mediterranean, the SAMFINN carried the money issued to the forces during Operation Anvil, the invasion in the South of France. The SAMFINN also served the West Coast of Africa, and later spent 22 month in the Far East. VE-Day was spent in Donla, French Cameroons, West Africa. VJ-Day was celebrated in Bombay, India.

Following sea service, Arnie joined the Clyde Port Authority as a Berthing Officer, and subsequently was appointed Safety Officer for the Port of Glasgow. These duties were inspecting information on hazardous commodities safe through-put of and in charge of incidents involving same. Also oil spillages, fire and safety in cargo handling. Was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to Port Safety.

Retired in 1994 and later that year had the first of now several visits to, and sailing on the SS JOHN W BROWN, to my great enjoyment.
